Corcoran School of Theater Arts 2009 Winter Spring Class Schedule:

Fantastic Fridays at the Ethical Humanist Society!

The Corcoran School of Theater Arts is offering a banquet of Performance and Arts classes for children 3 years to 18 years old, starting Friday January 16th and running through Friday April 3rd from 12:30PM to 4PM at the Ethical Humanist Society in Skokie.  Bring the whole family for a feast of classes including:  MacSith, Orion Couling’s Stage Combat class that blends the Star Wars sci-fi genre with Shakespeare’s MacBeth, Bill Olbrisch’s Circus, where you’ll be juggling, spinning plates, learning diabolo and clowning, and for the small fry, KellyAnn Corcoran’s PeeWee Drama and Project Play will provide the perfect blend of structured-project-based and open-ended play. In February we will be adding an art or writing class for 10-18 year-olds, (details TBA).

Parents are welcome to hang out or drop off the whole clan for a ridiculously awesome afternoon.  All classes will culminate in a final performance/showing on the weekend of April 4th.

Class Descriptions:

MACSITH

This 45 minute sci-fi adaptation of Shakespeare’s MacBeth is a stage combat & sci-fi lover’s dream! Young men and women, boys and girls and are invited to learn the ways of The Force through the story of Shakespeare’s most tortured villain. Acting, teamwork, communication, performance, safety, sportsmanship and combat skills will be put to use in this fast, fun, exciting piece of theater. Written and directed by Orion Couling, MacSith will be created and performed through the combined efforts of two classes. The Jedi/Sith class will include students ages 10-18. The Younglings class will include children 6-9.

Each student will be challenged at his/her individual skill level.

Materials included

CIRCUS

Students 6 - 9 years and 10 - 18 years will work on: juggling with scarves, balls, rings and clubs, diabolo, spinning plates, and other object manipulation and balance skills. Students will receive individual attention and be encouraged by the instructors to work on the best skills available to them and learn at their own pace. Students will be reminded often of the importance of safety and encouraged to be aware of themselves and the space around them. Students will be encouraged during this time to develop their skills into solo or small group routines that can be incorporated in the show. New students will have to “start at the beginning” and show progress in simple skills before being permitted to move on to more complex feats.

The class will also work on clowning and performance skills. The students will do one or more of the following in each clowning class: theater games, clown exercises, classic clown routines, student written or inspired routines, large group routines, pyramids, and tumbling.

Students will be expected to participate in the exercises both when it is their turn and in being a “good audience” and learning from the efforts of their peers.

Tuition: $150 all ages.
Materials for in-class use are included. If enough students are interested in ordering equipment a discounted group buy can be arranged with the instructor.

PeeWee Drama and Play 

This fun-filled imaginative class offers bits of structured dramatic play, art and simple science projects dispersed throughout a three-hour afternoon of unstructured play. In the dramatic play section, students will do group warm ups, consisting of stretching and tongue twisters then read and act out a story using fun props and costume pieces. In the art section we will look at works of the great masters and create pieces based on their ideas and/or techniques. Finally in the science portion we will make Goop, grow plants and created other experiments of interest. On some days we will get to all three activities and on others just one or two. The class will be re-imagined weekly around the curiosity, interests and desires of the children.

PeeWee $125 each for two or more siblings and includes siblings enrolled in other classes.

The Dracula Project Part II Dracula

Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4PM

Dates: January 13th - April 30th (additional tech week rehearsals April  26th, 27th & 29th)

Location: Chicago Dramatists, 1105 W. Chicago Avenue

Performance Dates: May 1st, 2nd & 3rd (performance location tba)

The Dracula Project Part Two will consist of the rehearsal and production of a full length special adaptation of Dracula, written for the Performance Ensemble by KellyAnn Corcoran. Tina Howard will develop costume and additional design ideas while assisting KellyAnn. Orion Couling will create and direct fight choreography. Each student will play primary roles, often playing more than one character. Students will continue to develop their dialect, movement and acting skills while furthering their understanding of the Victorian era in England and Europe.

The tuition for this 120 hour class (including performances) is $375. To be able to offer this low rate each family will be asked to make a commitment to help in fundraising a total of $2,000 ($250 per family) in a couple of fundraisers to be planned and organized by KellyAnn and a couple of parents who have already volunteered.
